"Remembering our Past, Embracing the Future"
Adapted from a 24k 1oz. commemorative gold coin that features Lady Liberty as a Black Woman. This is notably the first time that she has been depicted as anything other than a white woman on the nation’s currency. Lady Liberty is shown with clear and distinctive African American features from the fullness in her lips to each twist and turn of her locs. The US Mint said, “The coin does not represent a specific historic figure in U.S. history, but it represents, acknowledges, and "remembers" black women in U.S. history. It also celebrates and "embraces" their past, current, and future contributions and successes as part of our Nation’s diverse community.”
The coin was released April 6th, 2017, for the 225th anniversary celebration of coin production by the Mint and the Treasury Department. It is the first of a series of commemorative coins set to be released every two years, which would show Lady Liberty as Asian, Hispanic and Indian “to reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States.”
But where are they? These coins are not in circulation, rather minted for collector’s in limited quantities. There are only 100,000 Black Lady Liberty coins in existence. While they are considered to be more of a collector’s item, they can also be a great investment. The face value of the coin is $100, however it sells for far more depending on the price of gold. Today, this coin is worth over $2,700 and is still appreciating in value.
